Dual Ring Topology
To solve the major vulnerability of a standard ring, the Dual Ring Topology was created. This layout consists of two concentric rings connecting the same devices.
⚙️ How it works
Data flows in opposite directions on each ring. Typically, only one ring (the primary ring) is used for data transmission. The second ring acts as a backup.
🛠️ Practice: Run the Simulation
We have pre-built a Dual Ring Topology for you below! The solid dark line represents the Primary Ring, and the dashed orange line is the Secondary (Backup) Ring. Click "Run Simulation" to see data circulate on the primary ring.
✔️ Pros
Excellent redundancy. If the primary ring breaks, the network automatically wraps around to the secondary ring, keeping the system operational.
❌ Cons
More expensive and complex to install than a single ring due to the extra cabling and hardware requirements.
