Star Topology

The Star Topology is the most widely used layout in modern Local Area Networks (LANs). In this design, all nodes are connected directly to a central device, such as a network switch or a hub.

⚙️ How it works

All data traffic must pass through this central hub before continuing to its final destination. The central device acts as a traffic controller, directing packets exactly where they need to go.

🛠️ Practice: Run the Simulation

We have pre-built a Star Topology for you below! Notice how all PCs connect directly to the central Switch. Click "Run Simulation" to see data flow from a PC through the Switch to the rest of the network.

✔️ Pros

Highly reliable from a node perspective. If one cable or device fails, only that specific node is affected; the rest of the network continues to function normally. It is also very easy to add new devices or troubleshoot problems.

❌ Cons

It requires more cable than a bus or ring topology. More importantly, the central switch is a single point of failure—if it breaks, the entire network drops.
